015 - Tong Tong: Fitting In
"Sis, do we really need to go pick up my mom?" Chen Junsheng sat in the passenger seat, using his abilities to move the roadblocks ahead while tentatively asking.
Jianyi stepped on the gas pedal, gripping the steering wheel. Her skillful driving techniques contrasted with her youthful appearance, making her seem out of place.
Chen Junsheng had previously asked Jianyi how she suddenly knew how to drive, and she casually replied, "I learned it from watching online videos."
However, in her previous life, before leaving Chen Junsheng, Jianyi was utterly useless and couldn't do anything. Learning to drive was something she had to do for survival after leaving him, and it was a difficult process. After all, as an ordinary woman without supernatural abilities, she wouldn't have received any attention from professional drivers if it weren't for Mo Xiaoxiao and Huo Chengzhang's intervention.
As a result, she had gained a less-than-stellar reputation and attracted a fair share of resentment. But compared to what she had gained, these were insignificant. At least now she could drive, not just ordinary cars but armored ones as well. She served as the captain of the armored vehicle fleet in the military and had a stable source of food.
Jianyi pressed the gas pedal, swerving around a small car that was blocking the road ahead. She turned the steering wheel with a big circle, and with the motorhome, she knocked down several disgusting zombies that had approached the corner. Finally, she made her way onto the main road leading to the residential area.
Inside the car, Tong Tong tightly held onto her seatbelt, her small eyes wide open. She seemed to have not fully recovered from the sharp ninety-degree turn.
Jianyi saw Tong Tong's silly expression in the rearview mirror and couldn't help but smile.
Chen Junsheng, watching his sister's joyful smile, felt a pang of heartache. How much suffering had his sister endured that he didn't know about? She shouldn't have to do things like this.
"We're almost at the residential area. Give your mom a call and tell her to come downstairs," Jianyi instructed.
Chen Junsheng nodded, took out his phone, and called his mother. After a few sentences, the call was abruptly cut off.
"No battery," Chen Junsheng frowned. "My mom said there are zombies in the hallway, and she can't come down. What if we..."
Before he could finish his sentence, Jianyi interrupted him, "Then you go up and bring her down."
A water-based ability user in a world with a severe lack of clean water sources was invaluable!
"Chen Junsheng!" Jianyi suddenly called out. When Chen Junsheng looked up, he saw a large bus parked diagonally across the road ahead, completely blocking their way. Jianyi slammed on the brakes just in time to avoid a collision.
Tong Tong, who had been shaken by the sudden stop, seemed to have regained her senses. She looked at the large bus ahead, hesitated, and then raised her small hand, her chubby fingers spread out.
"Put it in?" Her childlike voice was filled with excitement and disbelief.
Jianyi saw the clear road ahead and locked eyes with Chen Junsheng, satisfied with the situation.
Chen Junsheng was momentarily surprised, then he turned to look at Tong Tong and back at Jianyi, a sense of wonder in his heart.
So, his sister was still his sister. Only useful people could stay by her side. If they were useless, she would kick them out!
"Tong Tong, put the bus inside. Does it still have space?" Jianyi asked with a gentle voice, her tone exceptionally tender.
"Um... it seems like there's still space. I can fit in a lot more buses." Tong Tong's soft and gentle voice was particularly soothing.
Jianyi nodded and made a sound of agreement. The inside of the car fell silent.
The residential area was narrow, and the motorhome barely fit through the entrance and exit.
The noise of the car engine echoed through the residential area, capturing the attention of all the residents.
Had the rescue finally arrived? Why was there only one vehicle? It didn't seem like a rescue!
Excited gazes dimmed, but a few people had different thoughts.
Jianyi maneuvered the motorhome to turn around inside the residential area, backing it up next to her staircase before turning off the engine.
The sudden actions aroused the excitement of the wandering zombies. They rushed toward the motorhome like they had been injected with chicken blood.
On the balcony, Zheng Lanxin saw the motorhome surrounded by zombies and her heart tightened. She almost couldn't stop herself from shouting, telling her son to leave quickly and not worry about her. After all, she could survive here for a while longer.
But before she could speak, she saw the car door open, and Jianyi, wearing a helmet and protective suit, jumped down from the driver's seat. She held an ice pick in her hand and swung it at a zombie as soon as she landed.
Her movements were swift and decisive, and blood splattered. She didn't even blink an eye as she killed three zombies in a matter of seconds before rushing into the building.
Chen Junsheng, holding Tong Tong in one arm and carrying an ice pick in the other, was also fully armed. He followed Jianyi into the building.
The two young people's brutal killings brought a different atmosphere to the gloomy hallway. It turned out that these zombies weren't as terrifying as they seemed. They were just walking corpses, and humans could deal with them as long as they weren't afraid.
In the hallway, there were far fewer zombies than downstairs. Jianyi ran past them quickly, avoiding the ones she could and striking the others in the neck, the vulnerable spot connecting their brain. One hit was all it took to make them collapse to the ground, completely losing their ability to attack.
Although Chen Junsheng was carrying Tong Tong, he found it easy to follow Jianyi as she cleared the path.
Finally, in less than two minutes, the three of them rushed from downstairs to their front door.
Zheng Lanxin had been waiting behind the door and quickly opened it to let the three of them in. She closed the door tightly and even moved the shoe cabinet to block it.
"No need to worry, pack up, and we'll leave soon," Chen Junsheng put down Tong Tong and told his mother.
Jianyi had already rushed into her room and took out her travel bag, packing some essential clothing.
When she reached the deep recesses of her closet and saw the clothes she had worn as a child but hadn't thrown away because they were still in good condition, she hesitated for a moment and then pulled them all out and stuffed them into her travel bag.
These could be worn by Tong Tong.
In this hurried and tense atmosphere, Zheng Lanxin had no opportunity to question her son and stepdaughter about stealing her bank card. She hurried to the kitchen and brought out bags of rice, flour, and oil.
These bags weighed tens of kilograms each, and the three adults could carry them, but any more than that, such as the pickled vegetables, the sweet potatoes she had just bought from the countryside, and the vegetables she hadn't had a chance to plant yet, would have to be abandoned.
"Auntie, go get a few warm coats," Jianyi, carrying her bag, came out of the room and saw Zheng Lanxin still regretting the sweet potatoes and pickled vegetables. She urged her patiently.
With that, she beckoned to Tong Tong, who was standing in the living room looking dazed, as if she had been waiting for her orders.
