The girl's emotions were highly charged, and I took a deep breath, squinting at her.
I've seen my fair share of ghosts, but this was the first time I had encountered this situation, so after puzzling over it for a moment, I quickly figured it out.
She had been hit and killed by a car just yesterday morning, so technically it hadn't been seventy-two hours yet. Her soul didn't realize her body was dead, hence her confusion.
After grasping this, I invited her into the living room to sit down. I took a bottle of orange juice from the fridge and offered it to her, knowing that it had been drunk by Jiang Nanfeng before, so it should be fine for her too.
She took the orange juice with vacant eyes, sitting on the sofa and trembling uncontrollably, clearly also shaken by the whole situation.
After taking a sip, she suddenly vomited it up. Perplexed, she looked at the production date on the bottle and asked me, "Why does this orange juice taste strange?"
Baffled, I said, "It's fine, just like before."
"Why does it taste like plain water to me?"
Furrowing my brow, I suddenly realized. No wonder Jiang Nanfeng had said before that their spirits didn't feel hunger; it seemed that even if they were presented with a sumptuous feast, they wouldn't feel a thing when they ate it.
Without expressing this thought, I cleared my throat and asked, "When did people stop seeing you?"
"Yesterday morning, when I was crossing the street, I felt a sudden pain, and then this strange phenomenon appeared." The girl finished her story, staring at me unblinkingly and asked, "Do you know what's going on, brother?"
I squinted, pondering whether or not to tell her about it. If I told her without any precautions, I didn't know if she would do something harmful to me.
After mulling it over, I decided to hold off on telling her and asked in a serious tone, "What's your name?"
"I'm Andor," she said, then asked the same question as before, "Brother, please help me. I really don't know what's happening."
"Do you really want to know?" I finished the last drop of beer and looked at her calmly.
Andor nodded, "Yes, I'm really scared by this situation."
"I'll take you to a place, and once we get there, you'll find out." I got up, took the car keys from the coffee table, and then opened the door. Once in the car, Andor kept staring straight ahead. I couldn't help but wonder; it seemed that spirits had this habit, as Jiang Nanfeng had also liked to gaze straight ahead before.
Andor's body was kept in the hospital morgue and within less than fifteen minutes, we had arrived at the hospital's entrance. It was already very late, and she looked at me puzzled, asking, "Brother, why did you bring me to this place?"
"Take you to see something, after you see it, you'll understand," I said, turning my head and then getting out of the car to head towards the hospital.
At this moment, the hospital was very empty, and occasionally, a few people could be seen sleeping on the benches in the lobby. I was very familiar with this hospital. We crossed the lobby and continued walking for a while until we reached our destination after passing through a dimly lit corridor.
When Andor saw the words "morgue," she hesitated and asked anxiously, "Brother, this is where they keep dead bodies, are we really going inside?"
I nodded, grinning, and asked, "Are you scared?"
"Yes," she nodded and then looked nervous, "It's all dead bodies in there, and it's late at night, just the two of us, of course I'm scared."
I chuckled and took a step, turning to look at Andor who was still hesitating, "Let's go in, it's not as scary in there as you think it is."
She took a deep breath and finally followed my footsteps.
The morgue's attendant wasn't there, and when I stepped in, a cold gust of air rushed towards us. It was my first time entering a morgue, so I was a bit nervous, but it was just a nervous feeling, not fear. I've seen countless ghosts, so dead bodies hold no fear for me.
I glanced at Andor, and she seemed genuinely very scared. She kept rubbing her arms and looking around, displaying an uneasy expression on her face.
I couldn't help but smile bitterly; we hadn't even entered yet. I wondered what kind of expression she would make upon seeing her own body.
The dim emergency lights kept flickering as we approached the morgue, and to my relief, there were no spirits in sight.
After finding Andor's body, I signaled to her, "Come over, after you see it, you won't be scared anymore."
Uneasily, she walked over, and I lifted the white sheet covering the body. As she saw the face, identical to her own, she showed a shocked expression, staggering back a few steps.
"It's impossible, brother, this can't be, how could my body be here?" As I expected, she was losing control of her emotions.
I kept my guard up, fearing she might go mad and attack me. I narrowed my eyes and said, "Now do you understand why no one saw you? In reality, you are already dead!"
"You're lying, I'm not dead, I'm alive," Andor crouched on the ground, shaking with fear, "I'm not dead, I'm not dead, you're lying, if I were dead, why wouldn't I know?"
I sighed; this kind of realization had a tremendous impact on a new ghost. Some vengeful spirits go on a killing spree because they can't handle this realization.
Despite my concern, I had no regrets. If she went mad at this moment, I was confident I could leave.
I was ready to escape at any moment and said in a deep voice, "You were struck by a car while crossing the street. You have no memory of it at all?"
"I was hit by a car?" Andor muttered to herself, slapping her head and then suddenly looked at me.
Her gaze sent chills down my spine, and I quickly raised my foot to rush out. But she sighed suddenly, stood up from the ground, and said, "I remember it now. After being hit by a car, I felt my body becoming weightless, it seems I really am dead."
I was extremely puzzled and asked involuntarily, "Don't you feel any resentment?"
"What's there to resent?" She said very lightly, smiling, "What's done is done. If resentment could bring me back to life, then I would resent the cycle of reincarnation."
I chuckled bitterly, her attitude before and after was so different, for a moment I didn't know what to say.
Andrea looked down at her hands, then looked up at me with an innocent smile, "Big brother, I never believed in ghosts and spirits, I never thought there are really ghosts in this world."
